The Domino Effect

It might appear to have begun real slow, but you've started a game of dominoes,
Each one falling into the next, this is what's known as the domino effect.
It's impossible to know the waves capacity to flow, only time has the wisdom to show.
Every action has a consequence claiming a personal recompense,
A unique and unpredictable sequence of events.

You wanted to follow what you knew you should not,
Couldn't recognise the best in the lot that you had got,
Hoped flimsy disguises wouldn't tear,
That nobody would see through masquerade clothes you wear.
But it's a small world in which we live and a weak loyalty is often what we give.
Talk is cheap,
It's results we reap,
The price is steep,
The dividends we keep.

Each block will fall in turn, it's a wonder that we never learn,
So easy to see the mistakes others make,
Harder to acknowledge those we take, our mirrors brake.
That spotted tile is at the mercy of gravity,
As our thoughts are to the level of our depravity.
But the domino run has already begun,
How different will your world look with the up and coming sun ?

How many lives tumbled down this time ?
Or didn't you watch ? It's not illegal, there's no crime.
Which will be the last to fall ?
Whose name is on the list to call ?
Let's hope it's yours and not another's, not that of friends, strangers or lovers,
Not with a desire to see you harmed, only your lack of foresight calmed.

How many words and actions were grossly out of line ?
Causing some to suffer yet you thought it fine.
As it didn't cause you pain,
It didn't seem to register, they're just faces without fame.
These dominoes don't make the decisions their own,
A new run starts with each look that's thrown,
So many possibilities and none you can postpone.
Hope as you might you can not have control,
Just watch and accept the knock on knock as the dominoes take their toll.

excellent, excellent, excellent. A good writer creates this kind of ambiguity to their work, laying it open to personal interpretation. You have some sharpened skills Georgie.

I once read that kids in America study the writing of Bob Dillan so what's different?

I think it would be so simple Georgie. If this poem was actually studied,it would surely have an effect.

"Every action has a consequence claiming a personal recompense,
A unique and unpredictable sequence of events" - Brilliant and very intelligent.

In a way I love the bitterness, in that there are people I would love to have aimed this at in my past. But you know what it's like - you always think of the clever line after the moment's gone. I'd be curious to know if this is aimed at anyone in particular, but then again I wouldn't expect you to tell us.

Once again brilliant.

I'm in total agreement with Matt. Urging kids to read this would make them more aware of the consequences of their own actions. Brilliantly written Georgie!

In my opinion, this poem should be sent out to school kids and put on the curriculum.
